Helen Hoang's writing is so authentic, so vulnerable, so gut-wrenchingly personal. It's impossible not to love her characters deeply. Anna is a classical musician who's lost her connection to music. She's been masking the truest parts of herself for so long, she's not even sure who she really is anymore. Quan never struggled with confidence before, but the surgery that saved him from cancer has left him feeling disconnected from his body and extremely vulnerable. What Anna and Quan find with each other is unexpected, but exactly what they both need — true acceptance, respect, and ultimately love. But, this is no fairy tale love story. When Anna's father suffers a devasatating stroke, she's forced into a caregiver role that she is not equipped to handle and spirals into a serious mental health crisis. Quan and Anna's relationship is strained and tested in very real ways, but there's no game-playing, no toxicity. They support each other and actively choose to be together, which makes the ending all the more satisfying. I'm so grateful to Helen Hoang for this story. It ripped my heart out and put it back together again — slowly, painstakingly, somehow bigger and better than before.
